The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum in Rio Grande, NJ, boasts an impressive collection of some 19 classic flying machines in its historic 1943 hangar. There’s the Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet, one of the most widely used basic trainers during World War II.
Also, housed in the museum’s 92,000 square-foot, all-wooden hangar is the “Huey” helicopter, which first appeared during the Vietnam War. Perhaps, the museum’s most prized possession is the TBM-3E Avenger, a World War II torpedo bomber — one of just seven aircraft in the country to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum and The Collings Foundation have extended AirFest and The Wings of Freedom Tour for 2009. This year, AirFest will take place over Labor Day Weekend, Friday September 4th through Monday September 7th. The Museum will host the event which will include music, food, vendors, exhibits and much more. Stop by NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum to experience this “living history” event. Famous WWII aircraft will be visiting Cape May County and historic Hangar #1 for four days. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight and more. Museum admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children aged 3 -12, under age 3 are free. Hours of operation are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm open Monday through Sunday rain or shine. Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar No. 1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945.
